If you know Nicky Zavala (Candelaria), you know her light. You know her laugh — the kind that fills a room and makes everyone feel like they belong. You know her kindness, the way she listens with her whole heart, and how she somehow manages to make every person feel seen. You know her strength, her faith, and her unwavering love for her family. Nicky has always been the person who shows up — for her children, her friends, her community, and anyone who needed a hand, a hug, or a moment of compassion.

Today, she needs us to show up for her.

Over two years ago, Nicky began experiencing a small twitch in her hand — something easy to dismiss, something that didn’t match the vibrant, active woman she has always been. But as the symptoms grew, so did the concern. After countless appointments, tests, and specialists, Nicky received the life‑changing diagnosis on October 28, 2024: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis — ALS.

ALS is a disease that slowly steals physical abilities, but it cannot touch who Nicky is. Her spirit remains fierce. Her love remains limitless. Her presence remains the center of her family’s world.

Still, the disease has brought profound challenges. Nicky now needs help with every daily task — bathing, dressing, eating, and moving. She is fully wheelchair‑dependent and requires 24/7 care. Her husband, Beni, has stepped into the role of full‑time caregiver with devotion and tenderness, but doing so meant leaving his job. Without full insurance coverage and with only limited caregiver support, the financial strain has become overwhelming.

Yet through all of this, Nicky continues to be Nicky — loving, gentle, funny, resilient. She is a proud mother of seven, a grandmother to two beautiful grandchildren with two more on the way, and the heart of a family that adores her. She has spent her life giving to others. Now, we have the chance to give back.
